Please call in your area for specifics! If you are a registered voter in Virginia, you can actually vote now as opposed to waiting until November 4th. This is called absentee voting in person. You go to the designated place to cast your vote on the regular voting machines. You don’t have to apply in advance or wait for a mail ballot.
In 2006, there was a bad storm on Election Day. Hundreds of Northern Virginians got caught in traffic and couldn't get to the polls in time. You vote on the regular machines and your vote is counted along with all the other votes. As you know, Virginia is a swing state this election so every vote is important.
Please share this information with others in Virginia because this is not well publicized. A list of key facts is below as well as designations for absentee voting in person.
KEY FACTS ABOUT ABSENTEE VOTING
Absentee ballots (including votes cast ahead of time at an "in-person absentee" location) are counted on Election Day in Virginia, like all the other votes. In Virginia, all votes are counted that day. Your absentee vote counts just as much as any other vote.
In-person absentee voting has already begun in Virginia.
If you qualify to vote absentee, and you are ready to vote, we encourage you to do so now. By voting ahead of time, you will reduce the lines on Election Day for everyone.
You need a reason to vote absentee. But the list of reasons has expanded in recent years. For example, if you work outside of your own jurisdiction, you may qualify to vote absentee. Or, if you will be working and commuting for 11 hours during the time the polls are open, you may vote absentee. There are also other reasons you can vote absentee.
There are two ways to vote absentee:
1) You can apply for an absentee mail-in ballot, fill it out, and mail or fax it in.
· If you need to mail in an absentee ballot, please send it in as early as possible. Ballots must be postmarked by October 28 at 5 pm, but only those ballots actually received before 7 pm on Election Day, November 4, will be counted. If you have decided who to vote for, send in your ballot now.
· Note: If you have not voted before, this may not be an option; unless you are out of the area for college or in the military, you must vote at an in-person absentee location (available now), or at your polling site on Election Day.
2) Or, you can vote ahead of time on a voting machine. This is called "in-person absentee" voting. No mail-in ballot is involved. Only one trip is required. You can apply to vote absentee and cast your vote during the same visit. More details:
